Lanto’s passion for fashion began at an early age. At 12, she started to recycle her mother’s engagement dress into a loose fitting top, with her mother’s permission. In 1992, she graduated from George Brown College in Creative Fashion Designs. She opened her store Harilanto Couture in Toronto in 1994 where she has used her full patternmaking and construction skills to design her own styles, employing not only textile materials but also aluminium and raffia. She has designed, drafted, and constructed clothes for her clients for daily wear, stage costumes, soft furnishings, and purses, and marketed her line of clothing to small retail outlets.
